What is Sex Addiction?
In medical terms, it is simply put as “sexual impulse control disorder.” It is an irresistible sexual urge or behavior (rape is another case of compulsive character entirely)
There seems to be no actual definition for sex addiction based on the early 20th-century research on sex addiction in accordance with psychopathology and psychology.
This means that the medical debate on sex addiction has no final diagnosis rather is not yet a diagnosable mental disorder, and it has not yet been accepted by the majority of medical practitioners to be a disorder. Like the American Psychological Association does not see sex addiction as a mental disorder, nor do they consider it to be a treatable disorder. Altogether the research on sex addiction in psychiatry and psychology has not been halted.
Some practitioners and scholars have decided to change the term “Mental disorder” to “sex drive control disorder” or “Compulsive sexual behavior.”
How to tell if you have a sex addiction?
A common addiction found in humans is Love and Sex addiction. The following comment will help us judge and see what sex addiction is:
There are two major stages of sex addiction.
Stage 1: the thoughts, the feeling that comes with it, the characteristics exhibited by a sex addict, the pleasure that is being felt, and the enjoyment that comes with it.
Stage 2: the pain overshadows the pleasure gotten. Feeling of shame, guilt, and frustration overshadows the pleasure.
(Not surprised these stages were rejected by some scholars who don’t see the first stage as an addiction but as a simple sexual activity, which is far from addiction or sexual control disorder)
Most times, sex addicts are thought to constantly change sexual partners or have multiple partners at the same time. It is true that most do have, but masturbation has been the way out for the majority of them and has served as a way out of their problem.
It is possible for sex addiction to get to a stage where masturbation alone isn’t enough to be a solution to the urge. Someone is concerned that his girlfriend was a sex addict and has concerns that she might seek out other options with someone else when she is alone, and he won’t be able to do enough to feed her of her urge. This scenario was shown in the movie Female Addict.
Sex addiction is also determined by the compulsive behavior that the person has toward himself, not just by the number of times he or she has had sex or the number of sexual partners that the person has.
In countries like China, or the west, vast and wide, sex is a topic that is easily and widely talked about on the basis of tradition, religion, society, and other aspects.
Sex is a necessity everyone needs, like how drinking and eating are a necessity. A sex addict can be likened to a person who needs a whole lot of food to get satisfied. Either he has a taste for the same type of food or has diversity in what he wants, but it remains that we hardly have space for more food after we’ve had our fill. It is natural for sex addicts to want more till they are filled.
It isn’t strange for sex addicts to have various kind of sex thought running through their head in any situation they are likely to find themselves in, be it on a bus, a meeting, at work, or even at a party with a friend probably because they can’t wait to get into action, which leads to masturbating in a public area where non on would see them.
Humans ought to have control over sex and be the master of it, but the daily activity of life has made it difficult for it to be that way. Sex is supposed to give pleasure and satisfaction, but people’s daily activities like work, life, and their relationships are making it look like a hectic task.
Sex addicts are not only obsessed with the sex process, the planning, the imaginary scenes that build up and other is involved, but in the long run, they end up being haunted by the guilt, shame, and declining self-esteem that follows.
Causes of Sex Addiction
Sex addiction can be linked to various factors, some of which could be caused by family factors, psychological, physiological, and social factors. The Physiological factors it is mostly caused by endocrine diseases or drugs. Researchers believe the physiological factors that drive sex addiction are more than the Sex Drive Control Disorder.
A study conducted at Cambridge University has proved that drug addicts and those who take part in compulsive sex have things in common. The same part of the brain is involved for both of them, the compulsive sex individuals and the drug addicts, which are involved in reward and motivation.
Academically, the consensus is that sex addiction means an insecure person trying to find validation and what they are engaged in and trying to find their self-worth in it.
Sex addicts, apart from sex, are also obsessed with contact and emotions to project their feelings. In the United States, there are good numbers of sex and love addiction clubs. Sex addicts are known to satisfy their emotional needs through sex. According to data provided, some people really find it hard to know that there is a clear boundary between sex and relationship, which prompts them to force themselves into an emotional relationships and also sexual relationships, which messes up their mental health leading to mental anxiety. Having too much sex, which might lead to a lack of orgasm, will most likely lead to more anxiety.
According to Marty Klein, an American sex therapist and marriage counselor, it is clear that she would not readily diagnose sex addiction because people who are likely to have this sex addiction are likely to struggle with psychological problems, high compulsive disorder, impulsivity, bipolar disorder, personality disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder.
Sex addiction and the physiological drug factor may be linked and be more to their childhood experience, in which they encountered major changes and more. Although it varies, as everyone has different experiences and situations they found themselves in, it might be more natural to one person than another.
Do Sex Addicts Act Dangerously?
Most sex addicts are a threat and hazard to themselves, greatly affecting and disrupting their own personal lives and mental health, as described above. Although sex addicts are likely to become sex offenders, that doesn’t relate to sex addicts being sex offenders, and sex offenders are not always sex addicts.
The majority of sex addicts do keep multiple sexual partners, which is commonly known as “Licentious.” I will not really go with the word “Licentious” because that itself is a term and label meant for strong emotion. From an academic perspective, it is usually called “Multiple Sexual Partners” or “Multiple Sexual Partnerships.”
They sometimes don’t consider the kind of partner they are with simply because they mostly don’t have control of their urge for sex and their general sexual behavior. Their partner might be married or single. Looking from the perspective of the moral level in the modern society we live in, this is considered to be a very complex behavior.
These aren’t the traits of sex addicts because there are a whole lot of non-sex addicts that still do exhibit these traits. And also, sexually active people don’t necessarily mean they have “sex drive control disorder.” Your sexual activeness doesn’t matter at all, as long as you are in a safe space and endangering your life, work-life, emotions, and society.
Finally, since we have no certain definition of what a psychiatric or psychological sex addict is, it is advisable and important that you do not have to treat sexual activities as if you are a self addict or treat someone else’s sexual activities like they are.
Overcoming Sex Addiction
Contrasting sex addiction with drug addiction, sex addiction is a state whereby an excessive amount of focus is given to sexual behavior, which brings in the term addiction. But this definition seems premature. It seems to give an overall generalization. Still, it helps people place a boundary and prevent them from gaining the knowledge about the wide variety of sexual behaviors and their motivations, which include habitual behavior, stupid behaviors, compulsive sexual behavior, wayward behavior, inflicting of pain and injuries during sex, and aggressive and more, these terms are quite impossible to have an interpretation, and even some people who are in need of lesser sex, might become jealous and describe some of they active behaviors as sex addiction.
How To Get Over Sex Addiction
Before thinking about getting rid of sex addiction, the first step is to find the cause of the addiction. Medical help should be sort after if it seems to be an endocrine disease so as to eliminate the root of the addiction in time. This helps the addiction to be diluted and, with time, gradually disappear.
If this addiction is caused by a psychological disorder, help from a psychologist is the right thing to get. There are many sex addiction patients who have anxiety issues or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The psychological treatment of sex addiction helps, and gradually they reduce the degree of sex addiction they have.
Modern society has a whole lot of pressure in it, and it keeps increasing by the day. Using other means to keep pressure off is advisable. For instance, gymnastics, running, singing, dancing, and engaging in recreational activities can help to greatly reduce the urge for sexual activities. You would want to prevent so as to be productive, especially being dependent easily on yourself.
Most sex addicts also attempt to look for the opposite sex to let go of their desires, so buying a real-life love doll is a great solution and an alternative to having a partner to release their desires, even during therapy.
The TPE love doll has a very detailed skin texture that can be mistaken for a real human, and the vagina perfectly mimics everything in a real person and gives the same and exact pleasure as a real person.
